Immaculate Conception School

Immaculate Conception School is a private Catholic Christian School serving students in grades Pre-K through eighth grade.

 History

Immaculate Conception School had its beginning in 1902, when the Franciscan Sisters opened a Boarding School for Girls at Saint Benedict Convent on Twelfth Street.  In 1913 the African Missionary Fathers built and dedicated Immaculate Conception Church and School on the corner of Laney Walker Boulevard and Eleventh Street.  They asked the Franciscan Sisters to bring their boarding school students and take on this new and larger teaching mission.

From that time until July 2004, Immaculate Conception School was staffed by the Franciscan Sisters and by very dedicated lay teachers.  Since the fall of 2004, the work at Immaculate Conception School is moving forward through the efforts of skilled lay teachers and administrators, working under the guidance of Most Holy Trinity Church’s pastor and the Diocese of Savannah.  Immaculate Conception is a school in which quality education is rooted in love, in care, in hard work, and in following the life and message of Jesus Christ.  “My grace is all you need.” (2 Cor. 12:19)

SCHOOL-CHURCH AFFILIATION

As a mission of the Diocese of Savannah and the Augusta Deanery, Immaculate Conception School is a special part of the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, whose pastor is the moderator and spiritual director of the school.  Children of all religious denominations are welcomed at Immaculate Conception.  While each child’s faith and religious practice is respected and prayerfully supported, all are asked to participate in prayer, in daily religious instructions, and in planned religious services as an important part of the curriculum, character, and philosophy of the school.

PATRON SAINT

Immaculate Conception School is especially dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and to Saint Francis of Assisi, whose simple following of Jesus has been a guide and an inspiration throughout the history of the school.

SCHOOL COLORS

The school colors of Immaculate Conception are Blue and Gold.

Immaculate Conception Catholic School, an educational program which incorporates a four-year-old pre-kindergarten program through Grade 8, aims to cooperate with the Church and with the parents in order to guide, instruct, and form each child; to help the child develop God-given talents and to set Catholic ideals.  Immaculate Conception School serves the family, the Church, the parish, and the state by helping students fulfill their religious and educational potentials.

The Pastor is the spiritual leader of the school.  His ministry and example bring the students to Christ and His Church.

The principal, in cooperation with the pastor  is the administrator and supervisor of the school.  It is the principal’s obligation to implement diocesan and local school policies.  It is likewise the principal’s duty to cooperate with the Immaculate Conception School Board and the Superintendent of Schools in educational and curriculum studies.  He also works with the parish Director of Religious Education to enhance the spiritual growth of the students.  Finally, he is available to faculty, staff, parents, and students as a caring and professional person, sharing his educational expertise and Christian concern.

The main focus is to impart the philosophy of the school by developing the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and emotional growth of the students.  Besides the full-time classroom teachers, the staff also includes a Chaplin, a librarian, a secretary, a teacher aide, a computer coordinator, an Art teacher, a Music teacher and a P.E. teacher.  Also available are a resource teacher who works with small groups, and a Reading Coach who works with the K through third grades teachers in implementing advanced reading instruction.

Immaculate Conception School Board, an advisory board, is the proper source of policy governing the Immaculate Conception School program.  It functions for the parish in selecting policies and approving programs, which relate to achieving the educational goals of the school.

The parents of our students have the responsibility and solemn obligation of educating their children.  We at Immaculate Conception try to build on what the family teaches at home.  Recognizing this joint effort needed for the education of a child, we emphasize the great need for cooperation between the two.  The faculty and staff gratefully acknowledge the  assistance of all associations and urge all parents to take an active role in their children’s education.
